Saddle anatomy
Eleven parts, each tied to what the listings state: a rawhide-wrapped custom wood tree under the leather, hand-padded suede seats, Flex Fenders and in-tree or in-skirt rigging.
Dashed lines show what sits under the leather: the tree and the gullet.
Part 3 of 11
Show and ranch seats are hand-padded and shaped suede with a narrower twist, which the listings credit for a close contact feel. The Grizzly keeps a traditional old school smooth seat.

Leather and tooling
Roughout, smooth oiled, basketweave, Entz and floral, oak leaf and acorn, and sterling silver plate: six finishes, each shown with a real saddle that carries it.

Suede side out, built to grip
Roughout turns the flesh side of the hide outward, so the leather grips and hides dust and wear. The Pro Work Saddle II lists supple Grade A roughout that breaks in quickly, over a sheepskin lined underside.

Billy Royal listings use the words sterling silver plate or plated: a layer of sterling silver over a base metal. It is show-ring trim rather than solid silver, so wipe it with a soft cloth and skip abrasive polish.
Silver trim careTwo care notes
Brush the nap with a stiff suede brush and keep it dry. Heavy oils flatten the grip that roughout is chosen for.
Roughout care guideWipe sweat and dust off after riding and condition when the leather feels dry. Lined skirts and fenders, as on the Georgia Classic, are listed as easy to condition.

Choose your horse type
A short back leaves little room, so skirt length comes first. If the skirt runs past the last rib it can press on the loin, even when the withers fit well.
Saddles for short-backed horses

Listing states a 27 1/2" skirt length for shorter backed or petite horses.

GREAT…
… I have had zero problems with this Saddle slipping, and my horses has even sweat marks and has yet to have a sore back! 😎🤞🏻

A little stiff - but time will cure
These are nice reins - although I would have preferred a version with no martingale stops. They are a bit stiff - but time and use will cure that.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!
It’s next to impossible to find a pretty saddle pad in the color purple, and I love the Aztec-ish design! … Ten out of ten highly recommend!

Beautiful saddle.
Shipping was a little slower than I like. However it arrived in excellent condition; is gorgeous and fits my smallish quarter horse well. … I would definitely purchase from this vendor again.

Beautiful horse size bosal hackamore
Very well made bosal, can be used for both practice and show

Beautiful and Practical
This handsome bosal is big, softly sturdy and tightly woven. It takes well to any weight mecate wrap. I would recommend it for any level horse, young or finished, Western or English. I bought it to give my well schooled 17-YO ex-show Paint a break from always packing an iron ibit in his mouth. (He hurt his wolf teeth in a rein-drop accident weeks ago) Zippos Mister Good Bar gives it Four Hooves Up!

Good
Good quality. Seems to be real leather and well made. I really like that it has a strap to connect it to the back cinch strap. Looks professional. I wish they made the window just a little bigger. The numbers just barely fit, and you have to fold the paper down on each side. …

Browse all guidesOwners who have reviewed Billy Royal products on Amazon rate them 4 stars and up in the reviews shown on this site, but written reviews are still few and we list only 4-star and 5-star ones, so this is not a rating of the brand. One reviewer says her Drover Ranch saddle "is gorgeous and fits my smallish quarter horse well"; others praise reins, pads and bridles. Judge a saddle by what the listing states (tree, leather, trim, warranty wording), check fit for your own horse, and read the current reviews on the listing before you buy.
Read the guideSeveral Billy Royal saddle listings, such as the Sedona and the Scottsdale Supreme Classic, advertise a lifetime warranty on the tree: the custom-made wooden, rawhide-wrapped frame. It is stated per model, so check your model's listing. The Pro Work Saddle II listing says "lifetime warranty" without naming what it covers. Tree coverage does not by default include leather, stitching, trim or hardware, and the full terms are not published in the listings, so confirm the wording with Schneiders customer service before relying on it.
Read the guideThe listings describe custom-made trees modified to fit modern horse conformations, from Arabians to Quarter Horses. That is a design intent, not a promise that any individual horse will fit. The Sedona listing gives a 27 1/2 inch skirt, a figure worth comparing if your horse is short-backed, and the Basketweave Square Skirt lists semi Quarter Horse bars. Measure your horse, run a fit check on arrival, and check the return window on your Amazon order.
Read the guideFull Quarter Horse bars are the classic Western bar shape: flatter and wider through the middle, made for a broad, well-muscled back. Semi Quarter Horse bars are a narrower variant, which can suit a horse that is not as wide as a stock-type Quarter Horse. Among the Billy Royal listings reviewed, only the Basketweave Square Skirt Saddle names its bars (semi Quarter Horse). Most listings give no bar type, so ask the seller to confirm before purchase.
Read the guideNo. Billy Royal show trim is described as sterling silver plate: a thin layer of silver over a base metal, not solid silver. The Santa Ana and Sedona listings say "sterling silver plated", and some models, such as the Elite Floral and the Tucson, use silver studs and conchos that the listing calls simply silver. Plate calls for gentle wiping and an occasional gentle polish rather than heavy rubbing.
Read the guideBrush off dust and let mud dry before brushing it away, brushing in the direction of the nap. Cover the saddle with a breathable cover between rides, dab stains instead of scrubbing, and keep it away from heat. Avoid heavy oils and saddle soap, which are made for smooth leather and can darken and mat roughout. If the saddle has a sheepskin lining, let it dry fully after a sweaty ride. This applies to the Pro Work Saddle II and the Two-Tone Roughout Saddle.
Read the guideUsed Billy Royal saddles do turn up in used-tack shops, auctions and classifieds, but no public serial number decoder or year chart has been found, so be wary of any seller who dates a saddle from its number. Photograph every stamp and number (the underside of the skirt, the back of the jockey, under the fender, the cantle binding), record the seat size and measurements, and ask Schneiders Saddlery, which handles Billy Royal support. They may not be able to date older saddles.
Read the guideWestern seat size is measured in a straight line along the seat, generally from the base of the horn to the top of the cantle, and makers do not all measure from the same point. As a rule of thumb, leave about a hand's width between your seat bones and the cantle and about four fingers between you and the swell. Many adults ride 15 1/2 to 17 inches, and small adults and teens often ride 14 to 15, but build and riding style matter more than height. Seat size does not change tree width, and a listing shows one size at a time, so check the size selector.
