Western Saddle Pads Compared
Compare Billy Royal saddle pads by thickness, size and construction: wool felt, steam pressed, merino, contour trail pads and show blankets.
A pad sits between the saddle and the horse's back. It cushions, absorbs sweat and can fine-tune how a saddle sits, but it does not repair a saddle that does not fit. Billy Royal sells eight pads with different thicknesses and shapes, so the comparison below is useful before ordering.

Wool and felt
Wool is valued for cushioning and moisture handling. The listings describe the wool pads as wicking moisture and the felt as dense and shock absorbing. Felt is compressed fiber; wool pads can be woven or pressed, and thickness alone does not tell you how a pad will perform. Compare construction, not just inches.
Contour and cutout shapes
- Contour pads curve over the withers so the pad does not press the withers when pulled up into the gullet.
- Close contact cutouts remove bulk under the fender and cinch area. They suit saddles with a close contact design, such as the Georgia Classic or Elite Floral.
- Wither relief is similar: a cut-out front to keep pressure off the withers.
Thickness and fit
Thickness changes how a saddle sits. A thick pad lifts the saddle, reduces clearance at the withers and can make a borderline tree feel tighter. A thin blanket adds little cushion but leaves the tree's own fit visible. Re-run the clearance check from Fit check with the pad you plan to use.
The Correct Fit Felt Pad listing says its shoulder shims are for horses with muscle loss or lean muscle behind the shoulders. That is the seller's description; shimming should be done with a knowledgeable fitter, not by guesswork.
Show blanket versus working pad
The Solid Wool Show Blanket is only 1/4" thick and the listing recommends a pad liner for extra support, which is a very different job from the 1" working pads. Choose a show blanket for appearance and a working pad for cushioning.
Size
Pad size should be at least as large as the saddle's skirts without hanging beyond the loin. For a horse with a short back, a long pad can pull against the loin; see Short-backed horses.
Care
Brush off hair and dry sweat, shake out the pad and let it air dry before storing. Wool and felt can mat when stored damp. See Saddle storage. Do not machine-wash unless the listing says so.
What we can't confirm
- The listings do not state weight for every pad, and some numbers differ between description and detail fields. Use size and thickness for comparison.
- Claims such as shock absorption percentages are seller descriptions, not independent test results.
- Which pad fits which Billy Royal saddle best is not stated, so test on your own horse.
