Billy Royal Saddle Lineup
How the Billy Royal saddle range divides into show, reining, ranch and work saddles, with a model-by-model comparison of tooling, seat and rigging.
The Billy Royal saddle range covers four jobs: the show ring, reining and training, ranch riding, and everyday work. Models share a design brief rather than a single pattern. Billy Royal listings describe custom wooden trees "modified to fit modern horse conformations, from Arabians to Quarter Horses" and a hand-padded seat. What changes from model to model is the tooling, the trim, the leather finish and the rigging.
This guide sorts the current Billy Royal Western saddles by purpose so the rest of the library is easier to use.
The four groups at a glance
| Group | Typical look | What the listings emphasize |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Hand-tooled leather, silver plate trim, suede seat | Flex fenders, lined skirts, close contact cutout |
| Reining | Basketweave tooling, concho accents | Pre-oiled leather, training D-rings, stainless steel rigging |
| Ranch | Basketweave and Entz tooling, smooth seat | Stainless cinch rings, tie strap, off billet |
| Work | Roughout or two-tone leather | Sheepskin lining, easy change fenders, stainless hardware |
Show saddles
Show models are the most decorated. The Sedona, Santa Ana, Georgia Classic, Scottsdale Supreme Classic and Elite Floral Tooled saddles combine hand tooling with silver trim and a padded suede seat. See Show saddles for tooling patterns and trim.
Reining saddle
The Tucson Reining Saddle is the one model in the range sold specifically for reining. Its listing describes basketweave hand tooling on the pommel, cantle, jockeys and skirt, silver concho accents, pre-turned fenders, and stainless steel rigging with training D-rings "to accommodate all training aids".
Ranch saddles
The Drover Ranch and Grizzly Ranch saddles share basketweave and Entz tooling and a narrow-twist seat. They differ in rigging: the Drover listing says in-skirt rigging, the Grizzly listing says in-tree rigging. The Grizzly listing names ranch riding, cow horse, sorting and versatility ranch horse as its disciplines.
Work saddles
The Pro Work Saddle II uses Grade A roughout leather and a sheepskin-lined underside. The Basketweave Square Skirt is described as tough enough for daily use yet tooled enough for the show ring, and the Two-Tone Roughout mixes roughout and smooth leather. See Work and ranch saddles.
How to choose a group
- Start with the horse, not the discipline. Back length and bar shape decide whether a saddle can work at all; read Gullet and bars and Short-backed horses.
- Pick the seat size next. Listings show one size per page, so check the size selector. See Seat size.
- Choose finish and tooling last. They change the look and the care routine more than the ride.
Shared features across the range
- Custom wooden trees, described in several listings as rawhide wrapped.
- Pre-turned or flex fenders, intended to let the leg hang closer to the horse and reduce knee strain.
- Hand-padded, shaped seats with a narrower twist.
- Stainless steel hardware on the ranch, reining and work models.
These are listing descriptions. Seat feel, break-in time and comfort vary from rider to rider.
What we can't confirm
- The listings reviewed for this library do not give bar angles or tree dimensions for every model, and there is no range-wide fit chart in them.
- Weights, dimensions and sizes differ between listing fields, and the variant shown on a listing may not be the size you need. Confirm before purchase.
- A model name is not a guarantee of a particular discipline. Choose by the specification, not by the label.
